AA Public Information Policy in Australia

Introduction

Alcoholics Anonymous is committed to helping those who suffer from alcoholism by sharing its members’ collective experiences and the lessons learned in achieving sobriety.

Central to this mission is the AA Public Information Policy, which guides how the organisation interacts with the public while maintaining the critical tradition of personal anonymity. This policy outlines AA’s approach to public relations, focusing on outreach to those in need without seeking promotional publicity.

The General Service Conference of AA adopted the following Public Information Policy, which sets clear guidelines for all public interactions:

  • In all public relationships, AA’s sole objective is to help the still-suffering alcoholic. Always mindful of the importance of personal anonymity, we believe this can be done by making known to them, and to those who may be interested in their problem, our own experience as individuals and as a fellowship in learning to live without alcohol.
  • This statement reflects a long-standing AA tradition of not seeking publicity for promotional purposes, but of always being willing to cooperate with representatives of all media who seek information about the recovery program or about the structure of the Fellowship.

In Australia, the Public Information Committee and the Committee on Cooperation with the Professional Community of the General Service Board oversee public relations efforts. These committees ensure that AA’s message is conveyed accurately while protecting the anonymity of its members.

Reporters are welcome to attend open meetings, social events, and gatherings of recovered alcoholics, provided no members are identified by name or through unique details. It’s important to note that photography is not permitted during AA meetings to maintain the privacy of attendees.

In various regions of Australia, local AA members have established committees to assist media and professional communities in obtaining accurate information about the Fellowship. These groups are available to provide background material and assist in clarifying AA’s mission.

AA’s Public Information Policy is an essential part of its mission to serve those still struggling with alcoholism while ensuring that the core principle of anonymity is respected at all times.
