Guidelines for Alcoholics Anonymous Logos and Trademarks

The Alcoholics Anonymous logo is a registered trademark in Australia, protected under specific guidelines that govern its use. These trademarks are vital for preserving the integrity and primary purpose of Alcoholics Anonymous—to help those struggling with alcoholism. Unauthorised use of AA logos on goods or services not endorsed by AA can dilute their meaning and undermine the fellowship’s mission.

Usage Guidelines

Alcoholics Anonymous maintains restrictions on its logos and trademarks.

This logo consists only of the words “Alcoholics Anonymous.” A circular design featuring the "AA" monogram surrounded by the words “AlcoholicsAnonymous.” This logo may be used by AA Groups and service entities on newsletters, bulletins, letterheads, and locally published literature that support AA’s Legacies of Unity, Service, and Recovery. It must always be accompanied by the ® registration mark to maintain trademark protection. Any unauthorised or informal use may infringe on trademark protections and weaken its legal standing.

Restrictions

AA discourages casual use of its logos on merchandise, such as coffee mugs, medallions, or other items, as it undermines the seriousness of AA’s mission. This extends to unauthorised commercial activities.

Exceptions and Clarifications

The words “Alcoholics Anonymous” do not require the ® symbol but must be accompanied by a disclaimer when used outside of approved literature or communications.

Refer to Section 11 of the Australian General Service Manual for more detail on permitted use and literature guidelines.

Understanding the Role of AA World Services and Global Collaboration

The General Service Board of Alcoholics Anonymous USA/Canada oversees AA World Services (AAWS) holds the copyright for all AA literature. This ensures that AA’s message remains consistent and protected worldwide.

In Australia, the General Service Board is actively working to ensure the local Fellowship has a voice in global decisions regarding AA literature. In 2023, the US/Canada Conference began exploring options for increased Australian participation in these decisions — discussions are ongoing.
